Overview

Situated in the heart of George Town, Penang, Jian Jian Vegetarian Food-TVR is a noteworthy destination for those seeking authentic vegetarian renditions of classic local flavors. Nestled along Lebuh Tye Sin in Kampung Jawa Lama, this humble yet beloved eatery draws in devotees of plant-based cuisine eager to indulge in Penang’s culinary heritage without compromise.

The restaurant excels in transforming iconic dishes like Char Kuey Teow, Oyster Omelette, and Wantan Mee into vegetarian masterpieces. Their vegetarian oyster, skillfully crafted from mushrooms, stands out as a must-try, offering the familiar textures and umami depth one craves, while the wok hei—the smoky breath of the wok—infuses dishes with unparalleled flavor authenticity. Similarly, the vegetarian chicken rice and herbal soup noodles introduce layers of aromatic richness, balancing healthful ingredients with robust, satisfying tastes that resonate with both strict vegetarians and flexitarians alike.

The dining experience at Jian Jian Vegetarian Food-TVR is anchored by a nostalgic kopitiam atmosphere, evoking the old-school charm of Penang’s bustling breakfast scene. This ambiance reflects its target audience: local families, workers, and food enthusiasts who appreciate sincere, no-frills service coupled with exquisite food. Though the space may feel warm and basic, and some interactions at the noodle station have been noted as less welcoming, the warm kindness of the owner softens this and speaks to the establishment’s heart. The communal feel, combined with affordable generosity, makes it an accessible spot for those exploring vegetarian interpretations of beloved traditional dishes.

What also distinguishes Jian Jian Vegetarian Food-TVR is its rotating daily specials alongside a consistent core menu. From Penang Laksa to Vege Lam Mee and even the classic Nasi Lemak, there is a breadth of options showcasing local ingredients and familiar spices devoid of animal products. This blend of variety and tradition fuels repeat visits from loyal customers who admire both the creativity and constancy of the offerings.

In summary, Jian Jian Vegetarian Food-TVR provides a compelling gateway into Penang’s rich gastronomic culture through the lens of vegetarian cuisine. Its prized dishes are not mere substitutes but fully realized plates that capture the spirit and depth of flavors inherent to Malaysian street fare. For anyone in George Town seeking a genuine culinary experience that honors both tradition and plant-based principles, this modest yet remarkable establishment is worth a visit.

Must try the vegetarian fried oyster (aka mushroom) and the char kway teow here, wan tan mee is just moderate. Although the place is not really comfy and quite hot plus the staff in charge of the noodle station was very rude and unwelcoming, please bear with it because the food is really great and the lady owner was really kind and nice.

The vegetarian food is opened daily . The wanton mee is a must to try. The mee gorong is a sweet to my liking but it suitable for the youngs. The hokkien mee is good too.

I am so thankful that my friend has shared this place with me. I have had breakfast here with my family in August, they are non-vegetarian but they also agreed that we have tasted the best Char Kuey Tiao in town, the wok-hei was another level! We have also tried Wanton Mee, equally impressive and we even have the pleasure to meet the stall owner, she recommended the vegetarian oyster omelet, so good! I wish to have a bigger stomach to try also the nasi lemak but sadly no. Strongly recommend this stall for the vegetarian version of Penang delight dishes! The vibe is the typical old school kopitiam.

Love this vege shop a lot. They serve authentic local wantan noodle. I love their fried mushroom as well. They have different special menu daily but wantan noodle is available daily. Their price is reasonable as well. They also sell more than 10 types of vege dishes (fried eggs too) and white rice. I order wantan mee (big) & fried mushroom cost me RM16.50. The portion of the food is average.

Another gem for breakfast. It was full house when we came on Friday morning. But we managed to get a table within 5 minutes or so. We ordered the most popular and highly recommended dishes based on Google reviews. Such as Char Kuey Teow, Oyster Omelette, Curry Mee, Wan Than Mee, and Nasi Lemak. All the food was so tasty. I personally recommend the Oyster Omelette and Char Kuey Teow. My wife likes the Wan Than Mee and Nasi Lemak.

As a Malaysian who’s been living abroad for many years and only turned vegetarian three years ago, the food here really brought back the flavors of my childhood. The laksa was good, and the hokkien cha(福建炒) were so good—we ended up ordering two plates!

Definitely one of the best vegan wantan noodles and char kuey teow that we tried in Penang. We looked forward to return, for larger portions.
